Amplification of this position from a kayaker's perspective
Kayakers have to pack their gear in dry bags as a general rule;
In order to fit the available space in a kayak and fit through the hatches, some of these bags have to be quite small. The result is a bunch of bags that are difficult to transport any distance requiring the paddler to make several trips;
Leaving gear unprotected invites raccoons to a free and damaging meal;
Leaving an expensive kayak unprotected invites the theft of that kayak, which is also your only practical way off the island ;
Kayakers are creatures of the tides. Timing your correctly departure is critical. I have had to break camp, load and leave before sunrise (in the dark). The only way to do this is to get organized, packed, and partially loaded the evening before. The problems in accomplishing this are obvious if the campsite (and the boat) are any distance from the departure point.
You DON'T want to be in the position of paddling against the tide in this area.
